Therapy Intensive:

Your answer to gaining and keeping momentum.

Sometimes 50 minutes just isn’t enough. Therapy intensives give you extended, uninterrupted time to dig into what’s keeping you stuck, work through it, and actually get somewhere before the session ends. Instead of spending the first part of each appointment catching up and the last part wrapping things up, you have the space to stay with the work and build real momentum. Intensives can be especially helpful when you’re ready to focus on a specific issue, move through a difficult experience, or make meaningful progress without stretching the process out over months of weekly sessions.

Why choose a therapy intensive?

Weekly therapy can be incredibly valuable, but sometimes you’re ready to go deeper than a traditional 50-minute session allows. An intensive gives you more time to focus, process, and work through something without having to stop just when you’re getting somewhere.

More time to do the actual work

In a traditional therapy session, some of your time is inevitably spent checking in, catching up, and wrapping up. With an intensive, there’s room to settle in, get to the heart of what you came to work on, and stay there long enough to make meaningful progress.

Focus on something specific

You don’t have to tackle your entire life at once. Intensives work especially well when there’s a particular experience, pattern, fear, belief, or issue you’re ready to address. Together, you and your therapist identify what you want to focus on and use the extended time intentionally.

Go beyond just talking about it

Depending on your needs and your therapist’s training, an intensive may incorporate approaches such as Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), Brainspotting, Internal Family Systems (IFS), or other experiential and evidence-informed techniques. These approaches can help you work with experiences and patterns in ways that go beyond simply talking through them.

Build momentum without waiting a week

Have you ever gotten to the really important part of a therapy session only to realize you have ten minutes left? Intensives give you the time to keep going. That continuity can be especially valuable when you feel ready for change and don’t want to repeatedly stop and restart the work from week to week.

Therapy Intensive Options

Currently, we offer 2 kinds of Intensives: Focused Therapy Intensive and Genogram Intensive. Both are 3-4 hours in length and offer a deep dive into your specific concern.

Focused Therapy Intensive:

Sometimes you know exactly what you need help with. You just need more than 50 minutes to work on it.

A Focused Therapy Intensive gives you extended, uninterrupted time with your therapist to concentrate on one area that has been difficult to resolve in traditional weekly sessions. You might come in wanting to work through a painful experience, quiet anxiety that just won’t let up, address long-standing struggles with self-esteem, or finally get some traction on a pattern that keeps showing up in your life.

There’s no predetermined agenda or one-size-fits-all process. Your therapist will help you identify what feels most important and use the approaches that best fit you and what you’re hoping to accomplish.

Think of it as giving one important issue the time and attention it actually deserves.

Genogram Intensive:

Sometimes the things you struggle with didn’t start with you.

A Genogram Therapy Intensive gives you dedicated time to take a deeper look at the family experiences, relationships, roles, beliefs, and patterns that helped shape who you are today. Together with your therapist, you’ll create a genogram, a detailed map of your family system that goes far beyond a traditional family tree.

As you build it, you’ll look for patterns across generations: how people handled emotions, conflict, relationships, money, achievement, addiction, religion, boundaries, loss, and more. You may begin to see connections between what happened in your family and the beliefs or coping strategies you carry today.

The goal isn’t to blame your family or spend three hours analyzing your childhood. It’s to understand the bigger picture. When you can see where a pattern came from, you’re in a much better position to decide whether you want to keep carrying it.

Intensive Fees

While insurance does not cover the cost of intensives, we still find they are 100% worth the investment. Clients report that one intensive covers about a MONTH of therapy work, all in 3-4 hours.

  • “One of the things I love about intensives is that we don’t have to stop just when we’re getting somewhere. I’ve seen clients make connections and shifts in a few focused hours that we might otherwise have spent weeks slowly working toward.”

    -- Sally Cleary, LCPC

  • “Accelerated Resolution Therapy is one of my favorite tools to use in an intensive because we have the time to follow the work where it needs to go. I’ve seen clients come in feeling like they’ve talked something to death but still can’t shake it, and then experience a real shift in how that memory or experience affects them.”

    --Sally Cleary, LCPC

  • “There’s something incredibly powerful about seeing your family story laid out in front of you. Clients often start connecting dots they’ve never connected before: where certain beliefs came from, why they learned to play a particular role, or why the same patterns keep showing up. A genogram can turn ‘What is wrong with me?’ into ‘Oh. This makes so much sense.’”
